FWC to consider changes to Florida Speckled Trout rules

Changes to Florida’s speckled trout rules will be on the agenda when the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission meets next week in Naples.
The proposals would be good for fishermen in our area – because it could open up speckled trout to year-round recreational fishing by removing the current February closure in North Florida Waters and the November-December closure in the southern part of the state.
The draft rule would also increase the commercial harvest season from three to five months, moving the open season to September through January in the northwest area.
Another item on the agenda could impact shark fishing in the state.
The Commission will discuss a draft rule for sharks that would completely prohibit recreational and commercial fishing for smooth, scalloped and great hammerheads and tiger sharks.
The meeting will be held September 7th through the 9th and it is open to the public.
