SOUTHERLAND WELCOMES RED SNAPPER RULING
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Steve Southerland, II applauded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Fisheries Service for announcing today an increase in the allowable catch limit for red snapper and the reopening of the recreational red snapper season after September 30, 2011, if the catch quota is not reached.
“As a member of the House Natural Resources Committee, I have publicly and privately urged NOAA to act on the concerns of commercial and recreational fishermen who are struggling under the impact of faulty, outdated science,” said Southerland. “I applaud this red snapper rule as a first step in the right direction. As a result of this rule, boats for hire will have the opportunity to finish the year on a strong note.”
"That being said, the federal government must do more to gather better scientific data and modernize allowable catch limits for years to come. We must strike a common sense balance that preserves Gulf fisheries for future generations while ending this burdensome regulatory assault on America’s economic engine,” concluded Southerland.
NOAA Fisheries’ emergency rule increases the total allowable catch for red snapper from 7.185 million pounds to 7.53 million pounds for the 2011 fishing year. If NOAA Fisheries determines that the recreational quota was not reached by July 19th, the season would be re-opened for a timeframe after September 30th.
