MEDIA ADVISORY
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date:--September 2, 2011
Franklin County:
We have had several inquiries recently concerning Franklin
County's emergency transportation policy in the event of a disaster.
The policy breaks down into two major categories: Special
Needs or medical and Transportation Disadvantaged. This excludes the hospital
which has its own policy.
In the case of a potential storm, when tropical storm winds
are projected to strike our area in 48 hours, those with Special Needs will
begin to be relocated to designated shelter areas out of harm’s way. These
persons will be picked up at their residence utilizing Coombs Transportation
Service of Apalachicola. We have several cases which will be by EMS ambulance.
In the same time frame, those with Transportation Issues are
divided into two groups. If you have ANY method to get to the designated
pickup areas, such as riding with friends, neighbors, walking, etc. utilize it.
If you absolutely have no method to get to the pickup areas, you will be
picked up by several of our local churches and transported to designated pick
up areas. There, you will be transported utilizing school buses to designated
shelters.
These persons are in a data base at the Emergency Operations
Center which is maintained by Joyce Durham, Special Needs Coordinator who can
be reached at 850-653-8977 ext 2.
You must have filled out the required form, which can be done
in person, by phone, or thru e-mail, to be involved in this program. You can also fill out the form on our
website at: www.franklinemergencymanagement.com
If you know of anyone who fits either of these categories,
check with them and be sure they have completed the necessary paperwork. We
don't want to miss anyone.
