County commissioners and the Franklin
County
emergency Management office are still working to expand cell phone service to
heavily wooded areas of the county.
The board began this project nearly a year
ago.
The issue was raised by Commissioner Bevin
Putnal who is concerned that a lack of cell phone service on Highway 65 and County
Road 67 in the northern section
of the county poses a danger to the large number of people who hunt in the
area.
The area is also frequented by fishermen
and both roads are heavily traveled.
And with hunting season about to begin
that area of the county is about to see a population boom.
Emergency Management Pam
Brownell said a group that is providing wireless internet to the area would be
willing to put up a tower if they can find someone to donate land to the
project.
The county commission agreed to ask the
state to donate a parcel.
A letter asking for the donation will be
sent to the State Division of Forestry.
Commission Bevin Putnal said expanding
communications service in the county would be as helpful to the state as it
will be to local residents.
