This is the last weekend
to harvest bay scallops before the 2011 season ends so take advantage of it.
The 2011 recreational harvest season for bay scallops closes at
one minute past midnight on Monday, September 26th.
This year did have a longer season than usual; Gov. Rick Scott
and the Cabinet, extended the season by almost a month to help fishing
communities on the Gulf suffering from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Open scalloping areas on Florida’s
Gulf coast extend from the west bank of the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County to the
Pasco-Hernando county line.
The most popular bay scalloping site
in our area is the St. Joe Bay in Gulf County.
If you decide to harvest
scallop this weekend don’t get greedy.
Recreational harvesters are limited
to 2 gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell or 1 pint of bay scallop meat
per person and there are usually plenty of officers to catch people going over
the daily bag limit.
