PANAMA CITY, Fla. — The Coast Guard medevaced a woman, Thursday, from a 30-foot sailing vessel 17 nautical miles southwest of Panama City in the Gulf of Mexico.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile,
Ala., received a call via channel 16 at approximately 8:30 p.m., from a
passenger aboard the Hitch Hiker, that a 49-year-old woman experienced
chest pain as well as pain and swelling on the left side of her head.
Coast Guard Station Destin launched
two 41-foot utility boats and crews, one to retrieve the patient and a
second to retrieve the sailing vessel. The first 41-footer crew arrived
on scene and stabilized the woman and transported her to awaiting
emergency medical services personnel at the station, where she was met
by EMS and transported to Fort Walton Beach medical Center. The second boatcrew arrived on scene at approximately 11:30 p.m., and escorted the vessel to safe mooring at Destin Harbor.
"Because
of our extensive training, as part of our organizational DNA which is
ingrained into our operations, the crew was able to ensure quick action
and an efficient and successful response," said Master Chief Petty
Officer Glenn Bucklin, officer-in-charge of Station Destin. "We rode the
westerly swells back to the station, which provided the safest ride
for the patient."
Her condition is unknown.
