County commissioners have agreed to hire a Tallahassee
architectural firm to draw up the specifications and oversee repairs and improvements
at the Armory in Apalachicola.
The commission agreed this week to work with Emo
architects out of Tallahassee – the
county will pay about 8 thousand dollars for the work.
The 108 year old Armory, which Franklin County has
leased from the National Guard since 2004, is generally used for private events
like weddings and concerts, but commissioners would like to see it get more use.
They have about 250 thousand dollars to upgrade the
building.
They would like to see repairs done to the leaking
roof, an upgraded electrical system, upgraded bathrooms, and most importantly
air conditioning.
For years the county sought Historic Preservation
money from the state to pay for the work, but that money has never come
through.
County commissioners now plan to pay for much of
the work using tourist development funds – they have designated the armory a
convention center to justify the expense.
