Lt. Dan Hahr responded to a complaint of night hunting in the Molino area. The complainant observed a truck leaving the scene after hearing two shots fired outside his home. He located a freshly killed doe deer and observed the truck return to the scene. He obtained a tag number and contacted FWC. Lieutenant Hahr located the deer and other physical evidence at the scene. The vehicle tag was registered to a female in Navarre. Lieutenant Hahr followed up the next day with assistance from Officers Christopher Pettey, Howard Jones, and Lt. Brian Lambert. Lieutenant Hahr located the suspect vehicle and interviewed the driver. After a lengthy series of interviews of various suspects, Lieutenant Hahr obtained a confession from one of the subjects. The subject admitted that a shotgun was used in the incident and was thrown from their truck a long distance from the scene. Officers Christopher Pettey and Gary Ridaught searched for the gun the next day and found it almost six miles from the incident location. Charges of night hunting and shooting from a paved public road are pending against the two suspects.
WALTON COUNTY
Lt. Mark Hollinhead observed a vehicle parked on Eglin Air Force Base Reservation in an area open for recreational use. Lieutenant Hollinhead inspected foot tracks around the vehicle and became suspicious when the tracks appeared to have been made with a smooth shoe sole without tread. This type of shoe is commonly used by someone wanting to leave very little or no tracks to enter a prohibited/closed area. Officers Andy Maltais and Randall Brooks responded to establish a perimeter around the area after additional tracks indicated the subject had entered a closed area. Once it was dark, the suspect exited the closed area and returned to his vehicle. When Lieutenant Hollinhead made contact with the subject who was exhausted and had blood covering his arms, clothing, and rifle. The subject admitted he shot at a deer, but was unable to locate it. The subject said he was hunting the open area, but admitted to killing a hog in the closed area after Lieutenant Hollinhead questioned him about his foot tracks around the closed area. Officer Brooks followed drag marks from the hog into the closed area after the subject showed the officers the hog he had taken. The subject was cited for entering/hunting in a prohibited area on Eglin Wildlife Management Area. Eglin Security Forces responded and issued the subject a three-year suspension on Eglin Air Force Base property.
