New Members

AFLAC
Jerry Alford and Christen Chason joined the chamber last month.  They are the local representatives for AFLAC insurance.  AFLAC is an insurance policy that helps pay for things major medical insurance does not cover like house payments, child care while you are sick or recovering.  You can also use it for transportation costs, insurance deductibles, doctor’s bills, or just bills that mount up while you are out of work.  Jerry has been selling AFLAC for 31 years.  Christen graduated from FSU and started working as an agent with Jerry five years ago. AFLAC has policies for both to individuals and businesses. Fann Construction
Elliot Fann joined the chamber with his construction companyFann Construction.  Elliott has been in business here since 2000, and in the construction industry for eighteen years.  He lives on St George Island with his wife Christa and two children (and another on the way!).  Fann Construction specializes in residential construction, remodeling and additions.  Elliott can also design the project and he provides free estimates.  He can be reached at (850) 227-6910, cell (850) 227-6910 or by email.  You can also visit hiswebsite.

Habitat for Humanity
Welcome Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County to the chamber.  The local chapter was started in 2003, and they have built four homes for deserving families on land donated by the St Joe Company, Cadence Bank and Centennial Bank.  Each yearHabitat does the Mardi Gras celebration to raise funds to actually build the houses. Last year they raised $13,000.  The houses are built for local people using local contractors and volunteers and buy their materials locally.  They have built two houses in Carrabelle, one in Apalachicola and are working on one in Eastpoint.  Pam Ashley is the chair, Cora Russ is the vice chair, Donnie Gay is the treasurer. Other board members are Mason Bean, Wayne Thomas, Melanie Williams, Kristy Branch Banks, Max Brown and Dan Cox. They are always looking for volunteers to help build. Capital Health Plan
Capital Health Plan joined the chamber last month.  They are a nationally recognized comprehensive medical plan known as an HMO.  They serve the seven county region that includes Franklin, Calhoun, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty and Wakulla counties.  Polly White is Senior Vice President of Marketing and Administration, and Donna Wells is Manger of Medicare Sales.  They offer employer or group plans with no minimum on the number of employees.  Polly can be reached by calling (850) 523-7266, by email pawhite@chp.org or drwells@chp.org or visit their website at www.capitalhealthplan.com.

Animal Hospital of Port St Joe
Albert Byas joined with his business Animal Hospital of Port St Joe, a full service small animal hospital that offers medical care, surgery, and emergency care.  Dr. Byas started the clinic in 2010.  He has been a veterinarian since 1992. Dr. Rosenbaum from Apalachicola also works there part time.  Animal Hospital of Port St Joe also sells prescription food for small pets on special diets.  They can be reached by calling (850) 229-6009, cell (850) 774-2295.

Beach Properties Real Estate Group, LLC
Welcome Kaye Haddock with Beach Properties Real Estate Group, LLC.  Beach Properties started in March of 2010, and focuses on selling both residential and commercial properties in Gulf and Franklin counties. Gulf Coast State College Open House 
The Gulf/Franklin Campus of Gulf Coast State College will hold an Open House on April 26, from 5:00– 7:00pm for the school’s Nursing Lab. Red Cross Gala
The Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will host its 2012 Red Cross Gala, On the Red Carpet for the Red Cross, on Friday, April 20, at Goodwood Museum and Gardens in Tallahassee. This fundraising and networking opportunity will feature delicious food, great music by Crooked Shooz, an amazing silent auction and, most importantly, the Gala will raise money to support our Chapter’s vital programs and services in North Florida. Healthy Start's Baby Shower
Health Start will hold its annual Baby Shower on Thursday May 10th, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm EST at the Centennial Building in Port St. Joe.   This is a free community event for pregnant women and new parents with babies born within the last six months.  It will be a fun event with games, door prizes, refreshments, and guest speakers. They are also seeking goody bag items and sponsors for event. For more info call (850) 872-4130.

-Morten Scholz was here in March for two days. He was updatingFlorida Det Dybe Syden, a Danish, Norwegian and Dutch guide to Florida, equivalent to our Frommer's guide.  

-Producers were in town March 26-27 shooting an episode of How To Do Florida. This episode is called How to Do Oystering in Apalachicola. It will air on TV stations across Florida, the Sun Sports Network and on Florida ABC affiliates.  They stayed two days and shot how to prepare oysters with Justin Timineri, the state seafood chief with the Florida Department of Agriculture.

-Andrea Piccolo with Jerawyn Publishing Inc. out of New York was sent updated information about Apalachicola’s marinas, marine supplies, restaurant, shops, accommodations and museums.  They published the Atlantic Cruising Guidewww.AtlanticCruisingClub.com
-Mia Blake with Slice Magazine was sent lots of photographs for an article they plan to publish. Slice Magazine is an upscale four color monthly in Oklahoma City area.
-Emily Q. Osborne with Tusker Television was sent information of oystering. A film crew shot our oysterman harvesting oysters on Apalachicola Bay.  It will be used in Aerial America: Florida on the Smithsonian Channel.  It should premiere in the fall.

-Marta W. Aldrich, Features Editor with American Profile Magazine was sent info on the area.

-Caroline Kilgore, photo editor with Atlanta Magazine was sent many photos of the area for a story they are working on.

Events
Full Moon Climb
The April Full Moon Climb at the Cape St. George Lighthouse will be held on Friday, April 6.  The sunset/full moon climb happens from 7:30 p.m. -9:00 p.m. and will include light hors d'oeuvres and a sparkling cider toast to the full moon.  The cost is $15.00 for the general public and $10.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. After sunset, people are invited to climb to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the full moon.  Space is limited, reservations are recommended. 14th Apalachicola Antique & Classic Boat Show
Apalachicola will host the 14th Annual Apalachicola Antique & Classic Boat Show Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, 2012.  On Friday, April 20th, there will be a boat building demonstration throughout the afternoon by local master boat builders and W K Sanders’ class from the Franklin County Schools will be demonstrating techniques and tools used in traditional boat building. 
The 1877 two masted, gaff-rigged schooner the Governor Stone will be docked at Riverfront Park for the festival. 
Saturday, April 21st, the festival begins at 10:00 am.  Antique boats, examples of classic and traditional vessels, workboats, and fiberglass and aluminum classics will all be on display until 4:00 pm.  Special highlights include authentic oyster boats, workboats, and home-built boats by skilled craftsmen, antique outboard engines, plus antique automobiles and art booths.  The Apalachicola River Keepers will be on hand with their boat to provide informative trips on the river. The boat building demonstration will continue. The Cotton Warehouse will be open so visitors can view the Apalachicola Traders’ Canoe, a hand built 50-foot long vessel used between 1750-1850 to transport trade goods was recovered from the Apalachicola River.
At 6:00 pm on we will have a dinner and lecture at the Apalachicola Maritime Museum. Reservations are required for dinner and evening lecture. For information please call (850) 653-9419 or http://www.antiqueboatshow.org

Florida Panhandle Lighthouse Challenge 
The Florida Panhandle Lighthouse Challenge will to be April 21st-22nd. The five area lighthouses on the tour include: the Cape St George Lighthouse, Crooked River Lighthouse, St Marks Lighthouse, Cape San Blas Lighthouse and Pensacola Lighthouse. The Florida Panhandle Lighthouse Challenge is timed to commemorate Florida Lighthouse Day on April 21st, which raises awareness about Northwest Florida lighthouses and encourages support for the preservation of these historic structures. Tickets are $10.00 and are available at any of the participating lighthouses. You must be at least 44 inches to participate.  Each admission price includes one commemorative tote bag, one raffle ticket and entitles participants to visit the 5 lighthouses at no charge. Each lighthouse will offer raffle prizes, as well as other activities during the challenge. Food, music, arts and crafts and living history presentations will be part of the fun filled weekend. Hours for the challenge are 10 am to 5 pm both Saturday and Sunday.

Panhandle Players
The Panhandle Players will present Sexy Please We’re Sixty, April 20-21 at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 3:00 pm at the Dixie Theater.  Written by Michael and Susan Parker, directed by Margy Oehlert this romantic comedy of misadventures will delight audiences. Tickets are $12.00 and available at Downtown Books, The Butler Agency and the Carrabelle Junction or call (850) 670-5064, 653-7688 for reservations. 

Patriots Weekend Cajun Cookout 
The Southern Builders Association is cooking up a Gulf storm to benefit Veterans Plaza home of the Three Soldiers, Detail South. April 28th, at Veterans Plaza there will be music, a patriotic ceremony and lots of Cajun Cooking. For more information call 653-5857.
