Van Johnson (unofficially) announces his retirement

Franklin County will be losing a long-time employee at the end of May.

Solid Waste Director Van Johnson told the county commission on Tuesday that he will retire from county employment on May the 31st.

He said he has already turned in the necessary paperwork to the county.

He’ll be a young retiree – he’s only 52 years old.

Van Johnson has worked for Franklin County since 1982 when he was hired as a Laborer Trainee with the Franklin County Solid Waste Department.

He also worked as a Truck Driver and Heavy Equipment Operator for the department before being named the Director of the Franklin County Solid Waste & Recycling Department in 1991.

Since then he has also overseen both the Animal Control and Parks & Recreation Departments.

Even with all of that he’s also found time to serve as the mayor of Apalachicola.

County commissioners did not have much to say about Mister Johnson’s retirement this week – but say they will have much more to say as the retirement date gets closer.
