Commissioner Adam Putnam Announces Free, Nutritious Meals for Children at Summer BreakSpot Locations Statewide
More than 2,500 Summer BreakSpots Will Offer Meals to Children in Need This Summer
Orlando, FL – Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, joined by Summer BreakSpot partners and mascots of the Orlando Magic, Tampa Bay Rays, Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins, launched the Summer BreakSpot program today in Orlando. Through Summer BreakSpot, more than 2,500 locations throughout Florida will offer free, nutritious meals and fun learning activities to children in need this summer. Floridians can learn more about the program and find locations in their area by calling 2-1-1 or visiting www.summerfoodflorida.org.
“More than 1.6 million students in Florida rely on free and reduced-price meals during the school year,” said Commissioner Putnam. “It’s critical that we continue to provide these children with access to healthy meals when school is not in session. By partnering with community organizations like recreation centers, churches and food banks, we can get the food in the hands of the children that need it most.”
Summer BreakSpot is managed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Summer BreakSpot began as a pilot program in eight counties last summer managed by the Florida Partnership to End Childhood Hunger (PTECH) and Florida Impact. This summer, the program consists of more than 2,500 partners and will serve children in all of Florida’s 67 counties.
To raise awareness about Summer BreakSpot and its locations, the department has teamed up with five professional sports teams strategically located throughout the state. Players, mascots and cheerleaders from the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Tampa Bay Rays and Jacksonville Jaguars will promote Summer BreakSpot via public service announcements and events at Summer BreakSpot sites in their communities. Other outreach efforts include bus wraps, flyers, cards and brochures.
The department has also partnered with 2-1-1, the national program spearheaded by United Way that connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities, to provide customized information about Summer BreakSpot to Florida residents. Operators at 2-1-1 can answer questions about Summer BreakSpot program, as well as direct callers to the nearest Summer BreakSpot location where kids can find meals and activities. 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember outlet that also provides information on housing employment and other local resources.
