Feds want to require turtle excluder devices in more types of nets

NOAA Fisheries Service is seeking comments on a proposed rule to require all skimmer trawls, pusher-head trawls, and wing nets to use turtle excluder devices in their nets.

The purpose of the proposed rule is to help protect protected sea turtle populations from becoming incidental bycatch in shrimp nets.

If you are a shrimpers and feel the rule might affect you – you can find the  proposed  rule and a list of frequently asked questions on the  NOAA Fisheries Service Southeast
Regional Office’s website

Written comments on the proposed rule must be received no later than July 9 to be considered.
