Franklin County crime rate jumped in 2011


Franklin County’s major crime rate increased 24 percent last year according to the state’s annual crime report released this week by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Franklin County saw increases in the number of reported aggravated assaults, burglaries, and larcenies.

State data shows that the total number of criminal offenses in Franklin County last year increased from 283 in 2010, to 351 last year – though the local population decreased by nearly 700 people over that same time period.

There were no murders in Franklin county last year.

There were 13 forcible rapes; the same number as the year before.

There was also 1 robbery, down from 2 in 2010.

The number of aggravated assaults rose from 85 to 90,  the number of burglaries rose from 44 to 75 and the number of larcenies rose from 121 to 157.

The number of vehicle thefts fell from 17 to 15.

Local police also saw a drop in the number of cases they were able to clear.

About 46 percent of local crimes were cleared in 2011, down from nearly 53 percent a year earlier.

The crime rate in Gulf County rose by over 30 percent last year.

There were 257 major crimes reported in Gulf County last year up from 197 the year before.

Gulf County saw increases in the number of aggravated assaults, burglaries and larcenies while seeing a decrease in the number of robberies and motor vehicle thefts.

Gulf County police were able to solve just over 27 percent of the crimes committed in that county last year – down from nearly 37 percent in 2010.
