FWC wants reports of chipmunk sightings

Chipmunks are pretty rare in Northwest Florida which is why state researchers would like to hear from anyone who has seen one.

Eastern chipmunks are thought to live in only a few locations in Northwest Florida - historically hey have been found along the Escambia, Blackwater, Yellow and Choctawhatchee rivers.

The species is more common in forested areas in the eastern half of the United States from Alabama north to Canada.

Chipmunks are smaller than squirrels; they are slightly reddish in color and have white and black stripes running down their backs and light stripes above their eyes.

Chipmunks are a species of special concern in Florida and this sighting study will be useful for a look at the species’ distribution, abundance and preferred habitat.

Researchers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are asking anyone who has spotted one to report the sighting online at public.myfwc.com.

Researchers are especially interested in new sighting data, but would like information on older sightings as well.
