
Annual SGI Mullet Toss
The fish will be flying June 9 on St. George Island at the annual St. George Island Mullet Toss. This quirky annual island event is a kid pleaser. A small donation gets you a tee shirt and two mullet tosses. The event is held on the public beach in front of the Blue Parrot Ocean Front Cafe and features men's, women's and children's divisions. Folks line up and pay a small entry fee that goes to charity for the privilege of flinging a fish for distance and prizes. To participate, just show up Saturday morning June 9. Cape St. George and Crooked River Offer Full Moon Climbs
Carrabelle Beach. On June 3, the Carrabelle Lighthouse Association will host a moonlight tower tour of the Crooked River Lighthouse. Climb tickets are $10. Bring your lawn chair to enjoy a free movie starting at dusk. Weather permitting.
St. George Island. Visitors will be able to enjoy the sunset and moonrise from the top of the Cape St. George Lighthouse on June 4. Tickets are $15.00 per person, or $10.00 for St. George Lighthouse Association members, and include light hors d'oeuvres and a sparkling cider toast to the Full Moon.

Lets Camp At the Beach
Many visitors think of the Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park as a secluded beach perfect for a quiet weekend stroll. However, this 1,962 acre park located at the eastern end of St. George Island offers a full facility family campground that would rival some of the best campgrounds in the country! The park features 60 campsites, a playground, electricity, water hookups and dump station nearby. Two buildings provide hot showers and restrooms. The park also has a youth camp available for group camping.

Snapper Season Starts June 1
The 2012 Gulf of Mexico red snapper recreational harvest season opens June 1 and will run through July 10.This year’s state season is the same as the 2012 federal recreational red snapper season in the Gulf of Mexico.Florida state waters in the Gulf extend from shore to nine nautical miles; federal waters extend beyond that line to 200 nautical miles. The recreational bag limit for red snapper is two per harvester per day with a 16" minimum size limit. More snapper regulation information is available by clicking here.
What's Biting Now?
June 2-10 is National Fishing and Boating week, a national celebration of all things fishy and boaty. So, what are you waiting for? The summer months of June, July and August in Franklin County are prime for tarpon fishing. Anglers should keep in mind that seasonal tarpon charters are very popular and often book up a year out. The offshore captains will be booking charters for grouper, snapper, amberjack and more during summer season, and bay fishing guides will begin looking for tripletail. The snapper season brings out the fisherman in many who visit the coast this month to participate in several fishing tournaments planned throughout the area. Here are a few of the Franklin County tournaments.

Turtle Season Underway
Early summers marks the beginning of loggerhead sea turtle nesting season on St. George Island. It is the season when local volunteer turtlers begin walking the beach in order to find, mark and protect turtle nests. Homeowners and visitors are educated about turtle friendly house lighting.
Visitors interested in learning about sea turtle nesting can attend 2 pm turtle orientation meetings on June 7, June 13 and June 27 at the Apalachicola National Estaurine Research Reserve Visitor Center in Eastpoint. The presentations are hosted by the SGI Volunteer Turtlers and ANERR. For more information about the turtle program, click here.
