Commercial fishing for Gray Triggerfish ended Sunday

The commercial harvest of gray triggerfish in the Gulf of Mexico federal waters closed on Sunday.

NOAA Fisheries Service says the 2012 commercial quota of 60,900 pounds whole weight of gray triggerfish was caught.

The commercial closure will remain in effect until January 1st, 2013.

During the closure commercial harvest or possession of gray triggerfish is prohibited.

This closure is necessary to protect the gray triggerfish resource.

The species is considered overfished and undergoing overfishing which means too many are being caught each year.
