Hi Folks,
As you may already know, Tropical Storm Debby caused a lot of shorebird nesting colonies to fail around the Gulf Coast of Florida, effectively ending the breeding season in many places. As a result, our volunteer efforts are regrouping to focus on the remaining few locations where the birds survived the storm or in limited cases are attempting to re-nest. As a result, it is more important than ever that we help protect these remaining sites from disturbance. In discussion with our land management partners, the following remaining sites have been identified as priorities for stewarding activities until the end of the season and are in need of volunteer bird stewards:
- Gulf Islands National Seashore
- Grayton Beach State Park
- St. Joe Peninsula State Park (Boat Access only)
- St. George Island State Park
I will be at the East End of St. George Island State Park this weekend and welcome newcomers to the volunteer corps to join me. I will be there Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sunday 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. If you would like to come out and join me for an hour or two, please send me an e-mail.
I’m also looking for experienced volunteers to take the lead at the remaining sites this weekend. If you have been through the classroom training OR you have been on the beaches with me, please consider e-mailing me and signing up to work a shift this weekend. The birds desperately need your help.
Thanks, Alan
