Eighth Coast Guard District releases the summer issue of the Guardian newsletter
![]() |
In this issue, we present a story on the annual Coast Guard hosted training event with the Mexican Navy. With approximately 38,000 active duty members, the Coast Guard relies on its relationships with other agencies, organizations and institutions inside this country as well as out. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Richard Brahm details how continually building a working relationship with our neighbors to the south could make all the difference if a large oil spill were to occur on the U.S./Mexico border.
We also followed Coast Guard crewmembers as they gave career and educational guidance to Alabama teenagers while teaching classes on ASVAB preparedness.
Inside, we’ve included a memorial layout in honor of the shipmates we lost in the fateful crash of the CG-6535.
While it is impossible to illustrate all of the diversity of missions and personnel in a District which services all or part of 26 states, 13,000 miles of coastline, 10,300 miles of inland waterways, and contains 10,250 active duty, reserve, auxiliary, and civilian members, the following pages capture many of these stories.
