Franklin County asks governor to seek public assistance after Tropical Storm Debby

Franklin County commissioners have issued a letter to the Governor’s office asking that he request public assistance from the federal government to help pay for damage repair from Tropical Storm Debby.

Commissioners expressed concern that the governor asked for individual assistance which would provide low interest loans to individual homeowners, but neglected to ask for public assistance which would reimburse the county for work it has to do on its roads, bridges and county owned structures.

Franklin County wasn’t even included in the request for individual assistance.

Emergency management Director Pam Brownell said the governor’s request was unusual because generally governors will ask for public assistance from the federal government and then individual assistance will follow.

County commissioners said they want to make sure that Franklin and all other impacted counties are included in any assistance request and said that if they don’t get a response from the Governor’s office – they will send their request directly to the White House.

The board also agreed to send their letter to the county’s legislative delegation to insure that as many officials as possible are aware of the issue.
