Animal Service Center Raises Awareness on Animal Homelessness - Recognizing International Homeless Animal Day, the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (ASC) will offer free animal adoptions on all its homeless pets this weekend, August 18-19. This is the third year that the ASC has offered an adoption special in recognition of International Homeless Animal Day. The ASC is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. "By providing free adoptions, we hope to find homes for all of our 152 adoptable animals. Last year at this event, more than 100 animals found homes, and we hope to beat that record!' said Erika Leckington, ASC director. 'This event gives people a chance to give a shelter animal a new lease on life!" The International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR) introduced National Homeless Animals' Day in 1992 with hopes of informing the public of the critical problem of pet overpopulation. Since the conception of National Homeless Animals' Day, ISAR has reserved the third Saturday of August to promote new campaigns, programs and ideas on the number one solution to the pet overpopulation epidemic: spay/neuter. This weekend's adoptions include vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, a small bag of food, adoption packet, collar and tag and spay or neuter surgery where applicable. All spayed and neutered animals are free for adoption. Animals in need of spaying or neutering require a deposit, which is fully refundable with proof of the surgery.
