Franklin County Commissioners ask constitutional officers to cut more from budgets

Franklin County commissioners are still trying to find ways to cut next year’s budget and are asking that constitutional officers take a harder look at where they can trim some fat.

Currently the Franklin County’s proposed millage is about 25 percent higher than this year’s but commissioners say they expect to bring that down before the budget is finalized later this summer.

The board will have to find over 837 thousand dollars in cuts to get back to last year’s numbers.

At their meeting last week, commissioners received a list of possible ways they could save some money next year and even though they didn’t take action on the list they did say that it seems that the county departments like the landfill and the road camp were taking the brunt of the cuts.

Commissioners said that constitutional offices which include the sheriff’s department, clerk of court and property appraisers’ office have got to find more ways cut their own budgets and save taxpayers money.

For the most part, constitutional officers have kept their proposed budgets at the same level as this year – only the property appraiser is seeking an increase of about 1 and a half percent.

Commissioners, however, said that everyone is going to have to dig deeper.

The board last week asked that its budget office take a look at budgets from every county and constitutional office to see where the cuts can be made.

Commissioner Noah Lockley added that the county will also have to take a close look at non-governmental groups that the county helps fund.
