FWC DIVISION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT WEEKLY REPORT August 24 - 30, 2012

FWC DIVISION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT
WEEKLY REPORT
August 24 - 30, 2012

This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week; however,
it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.

NORTHWEST REGION

ESCAMBIA COUNTY

On Aug. 28, Lt. Brian Lambert received a call from USCG Pensacola of a missing and overdue boater. The family reported arriving home on the evening of Aug. 27 to find the man, his vehicle, and personal watercraft (PWC) missing. A search located the man’s vehicle and empty PWC trailer at Pensacola NAS boat ramp (Sherman Cove). As all vessels from the USCG and FWC had been moved inland due to approaching Hurricane Isaac and sea conditions were 12-15 feet, only the USCG’s aircraft was available for search. The USCG reported a ping from the missing man’s cell phone late on the night of Aug. 27 coming from offshore, south of Perdido Pass. The USCG resumed aircraft search operations on August 29 and FWC officers continued to search along the coastline. The case is ongoing.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY

During the night of Aug. 28 while working the bravo shift during Hurricane Isaac, Officer Ben Pineda observed two vehicles operating within Eglin WMA in violation of usage hours established by the base commander. Closer inspection revealed the vehicles had been mud bogging within the WMA. When Officer Pineda approached, one of the vehicles fled the scene while the other vehicle was successfully stopped. Upon contact with the driver, Officer Pineda discovered the driver did not possess an Eglin use permit, had prior offenses on Eglin WMA, and had provided alcoholic beverages to a 20-year-old female passenger. The driver repeatedly provided false information during the stop and was subsequently arrested and transported to the Santa Rosa County Jail. The female passenger was issued a citation for possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages by a person under 21 years of age. Evidence and testimony from the scene, together with an ongoing investigation, should assist in identifying the second vehicle and driver. Information is being provided to Eglin Range Patrol for additional charges and sanctions from Eglin.
