TALLAHASSEE — With calendar date 8/11 corresponding to the nationwide one-call number, 811, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) is recognizing “811 Day,” the first nationwide media outreach encouraging residents to call 811 before they dig. An underground utility line is damaged during digging projects every three minutes nationwide, according to a recent Common Ground Alliance report.
Nearly 50 pipeline companies supporting underground damage prevention and safe digging practices purchased the network radio and television ads, scheduled to air on Saturday, August 11, during the 2012 Summer Olympics. The ads--on ABC, NBC, and NBC cable affiliates and Spanish radio on Univision and ESPN--encourage residents to call 811 prior to any digging projects.
“The PSC is pleased to support this important ‘call before you dig’ message that will be seen by many Florida homeowners and contractors during the Olympics,” said PSC Chairman Ronald A. Brisé. “One easy phone call to get underground utility lines marked can help prevent damage causing injury, repair costs, fines, and inconvenient outages.
So, remember to call 811 before your next yard, patio, or building project, and watch for the 811 Day ads while you’re enjoying the Olympics on Saturday!
