The
Franklin county seafood workers
association will kick off a reshelling program on Friday.
Reshelling
allows oystermen to move clean oyster shells to various bars around the bay to
give the spat a place to attach and make the bars more productive.
Seafood
Workers Association President Shannon Hartsfield said this will be one of the
biggest reshelling programs in recent memory.
360
people have signed up to take part – last year there were fewer than 200.
They
plan to do the reshelling from two locations.
This
Friday the reshelling will take place from the Eastpoint boat ramp with shells
placed at Cat Point.
On
August the 17th, reshelling will take place from the Lombardi’s site in Apalachicola and the shells will be
placed at Hagan’s Flat.
All
360 registered participants will be able to take part from both locations and will
earn 125 dollars for each boatload of shell they carry.
