Americans ate less seafood in 2011

Americans ate less seafood in 2011 – it was the second year in a row that seafood consumption was down in the US.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s annual Report on Fisheries landings and seafood consumption, Americans ate 4.7 billion pounds of seafood in 2011, just a little less than in 2010.

That’s still about 15 pounds of fish and shellfish per person.

The US is second only to China in total seafood consumption

In 2011, about 91 percent of seafood consumed in the U.S. was imported, up from 86 percent from 2010.

The top three imports are shrimp, canned tuna, and tilapia fillet.
Almost half of imported seafood comes from aquaculture, or farmed seafood.
America’s aquaculture industry currently meets less than five percent of U.S. seafood demand, producing primarily oysters, clams, mussels, and some finfish, including salmon.
