Annual Hurricane Lilies for Hurricane Relief Sale
The Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, in conjunction with Mittan Botanical Gardens, will be conducting its annual Hurricane Lilies for Hurricane Relief sale on September 15, 2012 from 9 AM until noon. The sale will be held at the Capital Area Chapter at 1115 Easterwood Drive near Tom Brown Park and beside the aniumal shelter. Plants may also be picked up by appointment only at Mittan Botanical Gardens at 11398 Buck Lake Road until September 20. Hurricane lilies or lycoris are also known as surprise lilies, red spider lilies or naked ladies. They bloom after fall rains in September and October, the same time hurricanes often visit Florida, thus earning their nickname. Unlike most plants, the bulbs bloom before they have leaves, which remain green all winter, then die back in the summer before the bulbs bloom again in the fall. Lycoris radiata is the red variety. They can be planted in sun or shade. The cost is $2.00 per bulb for lycoris radiata or six for $10. Daylilies require a sunny location but otherwise need little care. They may bloom anytime from March through October and retain their leaves except in a hard freeze. Buyers may pre-order packs of six different bare root daylilies, locally grown and ready to plant, for $10 or 12 for $20. Larger orders will include more different colors. All proceeds go to the American Red Cross. Cash sales only. Tax is included in the price. To order daylilies or lycoris, please contact J. B. Mittan at barrymittan@gmail.com.
