There
was a big turnout at last Friday’s resource fair in Eastpoint.
The
event was assembled by the Gulf Coast Workforce Board to
provide information and assistance to seafood workers who are currently facing
hard times because of the poor state of oyster crops in the Apalachicola Bay .
The
resource fair included a number of local and state groups including the Florida
Department of Children and Families, Gulf Coast State College, the Community
Action Agency, and Franklin ’s Promise.
Kim
Bodine from the workforce board said well over 500 people attended the event –
and many of them found some assistance.
Nearly
120 applied for some type of state services, while over 200 applied for
emergency services to help make it through short term financial problems.
About
100 people were able to apply for food stamps while they were there.
District
1 County commissioner Pinki Jackel said she was pleased with the turn-out,
adding that right now every little bit helps.
