There is still space in all three of these classes.
These classes are intended for coastal decision makers such as consultants, ecologists, park rangers, planners, permitting staff, ecotour operators, elected officials, developers, volunteer organizations and concerned citizens.
1. Panhandle Habitats: Barrier Islands
Thurs. Oct. 4, 2012 (rain date 10/5), 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time
This class covers such topics as island habitats, common plants and animals, waves and currents, hurricanes, human impacts, island and dune formation, erosion and regulatory issues. This class includes a field trip to St. George Island State Park where we will seine in the Gulf, explore beach and intertidal benthic habitats, conduct an island transect and examine interesting plants and animals.
2. Panhandle Habitats: Estuaries
Wed. Oct. 17, 2012 (rain date 10/18), 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time
This class covers the ecology, geology, and economic importance of the Apalachicola Bay Estuary. Learn about the habitats found in the bay, the fascinating plants and animals found there and regulatory and conservation issues. Be prepared to spend part of the day in the classroom and part on our boat trawling, sampling bottom sediments, and exploring life in the oyster beds.
3. Panhandle Habitats: Rivers & Floodplains
Wed. Nov 14, 2012 (rain date 11/15), 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time
This class covers the ecology, geology, and natural history of the rivers and floodplains of the Florida Panhandle with the main focus on the Apalachicola River and Floodplain. Other types of river systems will also be discussed. Learn about the rich diversity of animals and plants found in the river and surrounding floodplain of the Apalachicola system and their connection to the bay. Be prepared to spend part of the day in the classroom and part in the field on our boat exploring the river and walking in the floodplain.
All classes meet at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Nature Center
Cost: $10.00 per person per class (cash or check) payable to Friends of the Reserve.
