This week is Fire
prevention Week in Florida ,
and state officials are urging all Floridians to conduct a fire safety check of
their homes during the week.
To protect your home and family from fire, state fire
officials are recommending a number of actions to lower the chance of
accidental fires.
They include never leaving your stove unattended while
cooking – 40 percent of all home fires start in the kitchen.
Keep candles and heaters away from furniture or drapes and
Replace all of the frayed electrical cords in your home.
You also shouldn’t run cords under rugs in high traffic
areas of your home.
And most importantly, make sure you have a smoke detector
installed, and make sure that the batteries in the smoke detector work.
Statistics show that in Florida only 40 percent of
homes that suffered fires had smoke detectors, and of those only 25 percent
were actually working.
