RE: Flags at Half-Staff
______________________________ ______________________________ ____________
On Wednesday, October 10, 2012, former Florida and United States Congressman Sam Gibbons passed away. In 1944, at age 24, Gibbons served as a captain in the 101st Airborne, and parachuted into Normandy as part of the D-Day invasion. Congressman Gibbons was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1952, the Florida Senate in 1958, and to the United States House of Representatives in 1962, where he served until his retirement in 1996. He was influential in bolstering the start of the University of South Florida, the Southwest Florida Water Management District, and our country’s first Head Start Program. As a mark of respect for the memory of Congressman Gibbons, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at the County Courthouse of Hillsborough County, Florida, the City Hall of Tampa, Florida, and at the State Capitol in Tallahassee, Florida, from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, October 20, 2012.
