TALLAHASSEE –The Florida Park Service encourages residents and visitors to “take a hike” on Saturday, Nov. 17. In recognition of National Take A Hike Day, gather your family and friends, get out in the fresh air and enjoy all that Florida’s environment has to offer.
“Florida is home to more than 1,500 miles of multi-use trails in our 171 state parks, trails and historic sites,” said Florida Park Service Director Donald Forgione. “On Nov. 17, take a hike to clear your mind, get some exercise and enjoy the natural beauty around you.”
Trails and trail connections advance Florida’s economy, tourism, health, alternative transportation, recreation, conservation and quality of life. Greenways and trails conserve native landscapes and ecosystems, link natural areas with communities and provide Florida residents and visitors of all ages and abilities with year-round health and fitness activities and a connection with the state’s natural, historical and cultural heritage.
Trails are also great economic generators for communities. Trails consistently remain the No. 1 community amenity sought by prospective homeowners.  Every $1 million spent on the construction of off-street multi-use trails yields 9.6 jobs. For example, in downtown Dunedin, private business occupancy rates increased from 30 percent to 95 percent following the establishment of the Pinellas Trail. The state trail with the greatest economic impact in fiscal 2011 was the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail with more than $74.3 million generated for the local community.
To find a hiking trail near you, visit the Florida Greenways and Trails website where you can search for trails by activity and location. Check out the Florida Park ServiceGuide to Designated State Greenways and Trails, including the 110-mile Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway. Many state parks and trails offer guided hikesand ranger programs throughout the year.
