In early February you
may see 16 air commandos rucking along Highway 98 through Gulf and Franklin counties.
Rucking means they’ll be
hiking through the area with heavy packs.
This event will be a
relay Rucking with teams of 4 rotating every three hours.
The air commandos are rucking
450 miles from Hurlburt Field to MacDill AFB in Tampa.
At the same time the
commandos are hiking through the panhanle,
two more commandos will begin their ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro
in Tanzania, Africa.
Both events are being
conducted in an effort to raise money for the Special Operations Warrior
Foundation and to honor five Air Commandos that were killed in 2012.
The Special Operations
Warrior Foundation is devoted to providing a college education to every child
who has lost a parent serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps
during an operational or training mission under the U.S. Special Operations
Command.
The American legion Post 82
in Lanark Village is asking that people show their support for the commandos by
honking your horn, offering a friendly hello, or maybe providing some
bottled water and snacks.
The estimated dates that they
will be passing through Franklin County on Highway 98 will be Monday afternoon
February 4th and
Tuesday morning February 5th.
