Mardi Gras Feb. 1-2
Join in on the Franklin County Mardi Gras Festivities on Feb. 1-2, 2013 as the Franklin County Habitat for Humanity hosts its annual Mardi Gras benefit celebration in Apalachicola. On Fri. Feb. 1, the food tent at Riverfront Park opens at 3 pm; the pet parade begins downtown at the Bowery Art Gallery on Commerce Street at 5 pm to be followed by a concert at Riverfront Park. On Sat., Feb. 2, the Mardi Gras Ball will be held at Fort Coombs Armory. Click here for details.

St. George Island To Host Snowbird Day Feb. 5
Winter visitors to St George Island can look forward to some special treatment next month when the Island hosts its second SGI Snowbird Day on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.Events will include a raffle "run" to the local businesses, fishing tournament, lighthouse climb, state park entry and hike, island tour, bridge walk, bingo, a visit to the new Estuarine Nature Center, and dinner with a cash bar. Click here to learn more. 

SGI Home Tour Feb. 9
The St. George Island Tour of Homes will be held Feb. 9, 2013.The event is sponsored by the St. George Lighthouse Association. Tickets cost $15 in advance and $20 on Feb. 9. 

A free kick-off event featuring a presentation on area ecology will be held on Friday, February 8 from 6-8 pm at the St. George Island Fire Station on Pine Street. The actual tour itself will be on Feb. 9. Click here to learn more.

AMM Hosts Lecture Series & Launches Boat Building Classes
The Apalachicola Maritime Museum will host a series of lectures and workshops about maritime history and culture this Spring and has also announced its wooden boat building class schedule. 
 
Feb. 9 The Dog Island Shipwreck Survey, by Dr. Chuck Meide, Director of the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program. There are more than 100 shipwrecks in the vicinity of Dog Island. Archaeologist Dr. Chuck Meide led the research team that documented these sites.

The Apalachicola Maritime Museum recently announced its 2013 wooden boat building class schedule.Individuals and small groups can now enroll to build a variety of small vessels including a canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or passagemaker dinghy. Below is a list of upcoming boat building classes.Click here to link to the area museum page to learn more about the Maritime Museum and other museums countywide.

February Theatre & Music Lineup
Performance art dominates the culture scene this month. The Dixie Theatre and the Panhandle Players group each have performances scheduled.

The Historic Dixie Theatre in Apalachicola continues its 16th Season of Performances this month.

Feb. 8-10 - Bob Milne Ragtime Piano - The top ragtime/boogie-woogie pianist today, Bob delights audiences with his piano-playing pyrotechnics and his infectious enthusiasm for the music and the history behind the music.
 
Spies, murder, love, and other trademarks of Alfred Hitchcock come to life in the style of a 1940s radio broadcast complete with vintage commercials, a daring train chase, a serial killer's ominous presence, and a devastating explosion through the magic of live sound effects and music.
 
In the tradition of Lily Tomlin, Nancy Hasty brings her one-woman show with 15 hilarious true-to-life characters to the Forgotten Coast of Florida…you’ll laugh yourself silly.
 
 
 
Panhandle Players Perform Catfish Moon 
The Panhandle Players will perform the Comedy Play "Catfish Moon" on Feb. 1-3 at the Eastpoint Firehouse. A second performance of the play will run Feb. 8-10 at Apalachicola's Trinity Church Benedict Hall.  Tickets are $15. 
 
 
 


Beth Appleton Exhibit, Gallery Talk and Childrens' Reading Program Scheduled for February
The Apalachicola Museum of Art (AMA) will host a Beth Appleton exhibit Feb. 8 - March 15. A nationally-recognized talent, Appleton's newest work "Aquatica 4x” will be on display."Aquatica 4x" is a watercolor/cut paper assemblage inspired by microscopic images of the area's coastal waters. Appleton's new children's book "Gently Down the Stream" will also be featured at the exhibit as well as a short film the artist created. The Appleton Exhibit will open with a reception Feb. 8 from 6-8 and will feture vocalist Velma Frye at the Apalachicola Museum of Art, located at 96 5th Street. Click here for details.
 
Beth Appleton will also be the featured guest for a Gallery Talk on Feb. 23 at the Apalachicola Museum of Art. The talk will feature a discussion of Appleton's art and will feature her film. Representatives from the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, BringMeABook Franklin, Apalachicola Museum of Art local Coastal Cleanup organization will be on hand. Click here for details.  
 
Appleton's book "Gently Down the Stream" is the focus of a February children's art and reading program hosted by the BringMeABook Franklin and the AMA. Appleton's book will be featured at Read Aloud events at each of the county's three elementary schools during February and a copy of the book is being provided to all Franklin County elementary school students. Additionally, the AMA is planning a series of elementary school field trips to the Appleton exhibit during February. Contact theApalachicola Museum of Art for details. 
 

HCA Hosts Spring Art Workshops
The Apalachicola School of Art will host a series of art workshops this spring.


Feb. 7-9 - Paint Like a Plein Air Artist Pastel/Oil Painting - Greg Barnes Explore the impressionist style with award winning plein air artist Greg Barnes as your personal guide.

Feb. 21-23 - Luke Buck Watercolor Workshop - Luke Buck will be teaching his unique technique of watercolor painting with lecture, demonstrations, critiques, and step-by-step painting with one-on-one instruction. 
 
March 8-10 - Hodges Soileau Painting Workshop - Hodges will impart some of the principals that he uses and considers most important - shape, value, edges & color temperature - whether one is working in oils, or any medium that uses color.

March 21-24 - Ken Dewaard Painting Workshop - During this Four Day Plein Air Workshop, students will inevitably be chasing the light and seeing beyond what is there, pushing to simplify the overall scene and see the beauty before us.
 

African American History Festival Feb. 15-17
This two day festival showcases African American History, Art, and Culture in Apalachicola. Saturday begins with the festival parade at 10 am followed by the official opening ceremonies.There will be live entertainment throughout the two day event. For more information, click here.

Dixie Anniversary Gala
In celebration of its 100 Year Anniversary, the Dixie Theatre will host a Gala Party on Feb. 15 at the Apalachicola Sefood Grill. The event will feature the unveiling of a Dixie Theatre painting by local artist Tom Tiffin.
