County commission opens bids for hangar construction

Franklin County commissioners opened bids on Tuesday for the construction of a new corporate hangar at the Apalachicola airport but the bids may be too expensive.

The board opened bids from 5 companies that would like to build the 60 by 60 hangar which would include room for an airplane as well as for a small office.

The county has about 180 thousand dollars in Department of Transportation funds for the construction.

The lowest bid, however, came in at over 196 thousand dollars; the highest over 261 thousand dollars.

Commissioners discussed a few options – which included building a smaller building or using the money to upgrade an existing hangar, but decided to let the airport advisory committee weigh in on the issue before making a final decision.

The commission said it will consider the issue further at their next meeting.

The county has until the end of June to use the DOT money or risks losing the funds.
