Highlights - February 6, 2013
NOAA is working to rebuild California's Russian River habitat; improve rainfall, flooding, and frost forecasts; and increase community resiliency to flood damage in this watershed.

Meet Mark Twinam of St. Petersburg, Florida, who fishes from Madeira Beach for large coastal sharks such as hammerhead, lemon and bull sharks in the Gulf of Mexico.

Updates to The Fish Stock Sustainability Index reflect the status of stocks as of December 2012. It is a measure of the sustainability of U.S. fisheries and tracks the performance of 230 key fish stocks important to U.S. commercial and recreational fisheries. 
 
Northeast
This is a reminder that applications for limited access permits are due February 28, 2013.      
 
The 2013 quotas for the Atlantic mackerel, Illex squid, longfin squid, and butterfish fisheries are effective from January 16, 2013, through December 31, 2013.
Northwest
The successful reintroduction of this species is an important component of the long-term recovery plan and will benefit all who live, work, and play in the Deschutes River Basin. 

NOAA Fisheries has received a Tribal Resource Management Plan from the Nez Perce Tribe and an updated Fishery Management and Evaluation Plan for fishery management in the Snake River Basin in Northeast Oregon. Please comment by February 22.
NOAA Fisheries announces the draft Recovery Plan for the North Pacific right whale available for comment by March 11.
Southwest
NOAA Fisheries is extending the temporary rule that delayed or revised several portions of the Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery Trawl Rationalization Program regulations. It is extended to July 22, 2013. 
Alaska 
Sixteen staff from the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) retired between August 2012 and January 2013.  The group includes program and division directors, research fishery biologists, IT specialists, a zoologist, and a program analyst, who together have contributed to the NOAA mission, and the Center's mission particularly, for more than 500 years.

Pollock in One Area of the Gulf of Alaska
NOAA Fisheries is prohibiting directed fishing for pollock in a specific area of the Gulf of Alaska. This action is necessary to prevent exceeding the season allowance of the 2013 total allowable catch of pollock for this area.
