Michael Shuler will remain county attorney

Michael Shuler will remain county attorney.

The county commission voted Tuesday to retain Michael Shuler who has served as the county attorney since 2003.

The county commission voted in December to seek proposals from attorneys and law firms in the area in an effort to save money on their legal costs.

Five attorneys from around the area put in bids to serve as attorney for the Franklin County Commission.

The board held interviews in early February but found itself divided over how to move forward after that.

Initially the board tabled discussions after one commissioner said he had received threats over the issue, at the subsequent meeting the item was tabled after the board found itself divided over which rules govern board actions.

On Tuesday, however, the issue was put to rest, but not without dissention.

Commissioner Pinki Jackel first made motions to hire Ethan Way and another to hire Kristie Branch – both of those motions died for lack of a second.

Commissioner William Massey finally ended the discussion when he made the motion to reject all of the bids and retain the current county attorney – that motion was seconded by Smokey Parrish and passed 3 to 2.

It was opposed by Pinki Jackel and Commission chairman Cheryl Sanders.
