400,000 Sign Up For Statewide Do Not Call List Since Fee Was Eliminated One Year Ago

Do Not Call List Helps Protect Consumers from Deceptive Calls, Scams

Tallahassee, FL – One year ago, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam H. Putnam removed the $10 registration fee and $5 annual fee for individuals to sign up for the statewide Do Not Call list. Since that time, almost 400,000 phone numbers have been added to the list so that individuals are not bothered at home by telemarketers, solicitors and scammers.

“The statewide Do Not Call list is an overwhelming success,” said Commissioner Putnam. “By eliminating the cost to consumers, we’re able to protect even more Floridians from bothersome and sometimes deceptive calls. Safeguarding consumers from telemarketers, fraud and scams is a priority.”

Before the fee was eliminated on April 23, 2012, there were 71,460 phone numbers on the statewide list. Today, there are 464,047 phone numbers subscribed, protecting hundreds of thousands of Florida consumers.

“I appreciate the support of Senator Anitere Flores and Representative Dana Young in helping us make this happen,” Commissioner Putnam said.

A bill proposed in 2012 by Sen. Flores (S.B. 888) and Rep. Young (H.B. 749) allowed the department to eliminate the fee for consumers. An increase in penalties for violations of Florida’s Do Not Call List helps cover the cost of administering the program.

Anyone who would like to add a number to the list can call 1-800-HELP-FLA (435-7352) or, for Spanish speakers, 1-800-FL-AYUDA (352-9832). You can also sign up for the list online atwww.800helpfla.com. The state’s Do Not Call list is updated quarterly and available to solicitors upon request. It is illegal for solicitors to make telephone calls to phone numbers on Florida’s Do Not Call list.
