Birds are nesting - be courteous.

As a critical part of the Gulf coast ecosystem, nesting shorebirds need your help. The old St. George Island Bridge causeway and “Bird Island” dredge spoil island south of the high hump of the Apalachicola Bridge are closed for nesting birds from April 1-August 31.  Adult birds cannot protect their chicks from predation or the summer sun if chased off of their nests. To do your part, appreciate shorebirds from a distance. This includes keeping your dogs or other pets away from nesting birds, eggs, and chicks. Please share the shore and respect areas where bird signs are posted. The Causeway and Bird Island are managed by the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve. For more information about our nesting shorebirds you can contact the reserve at 670-7700.
