Franklin county to take legal action against courthouse roofing contractor

The County commission voted this week to seek legal action against the roofing contractor that did the most recent repairs to the roof on the courthouse in Apalachicola.

The courthouse suffered about 33 thousand dollars in water damage to the interior of the courthouse during heavy rains earlier this year.

The county’s insurance company has refused denied coverage because they found no sign of storm damage but said the damage was caused by pre-existing leaks, inadequate storm drains and standing water on the roof.

The county believes the problem was caused by an improperly connected roof drain.

County attorney Michael Shuler said the problem was a three inch drain on the new roof running into a 6 inch pipe from the old construction which was improperly sealed.

The contractor has denied any fault, but a local plumbing contractor and architect have said the problem stemmed from the improper drain connection.

The County attorney said the county will have to seek a formal opinion before moving forward but the county commission did give its blessing to start a formal investigation and take enforcement action against the roofing contractor.
