Plantation pine trees victims of last summer's storms ( and beetles)

Last summer’s tropical storms are still claiming some local victims – in this case pine trees in the St. George Plantation.

County Extension agent Bill Mahan told county commissioners that he was called in to the Plantation on April 17th by some homeowners to help identify what was killing pine trees in the gated community.

Mister Mahan along with Daniel Stevens of the Florida Forest Service visited the site and determined that the trees were likely severely stressed by saltwater flooding during last year’s storms Debby & Isaac.

The root damage caused by the saltwater flooding stressed the trees to the point where they were successfully attacked by Ips bark beetles and killed.
