You're Invited to a Special Weekend of Events!
Join us! Tours, living history at several venues, displays, weapons drills and demonstrations, a camp-style worship service, Civil War era music, outdoor theater, encampments, lectures, story telling, cemetery tours, boat tours, and activities for kids.
Just some of the events happening this weekend:
At 7 p.m. Friday, the Director of the National Civil War Naval Museum, Ken Johnston, will give a lecture at the Maritime Museum. $5 includes low country boil on the docks.
8:15 a.m. Saturday: Exhibit Talk. Grab a coffee in our gift shop and join artifact expert Mark Parsley for a talk about our new Civil War exhibit. Find out all the details on our weapons collection and more. $5 museum admission gets you a wristband good all day.
At 9 a.m. Saturday, Union reenactors will arrive at the Maritime Museum docks in a reproduction launch to announce the closing of the port. Concerned citizens in period attire will be there to meet them. Based on historic records of the encounter. Thanks to the Panhandle Players.
At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, members of area United Daughters of the Confederacy will meet at the Community Center at Battery Park. Open to the public. They will also be available throughout most of the day to provide information to anyone interested in joining or starting a local chapter.
Lecture Series at the Center for History, Culture, and Art. Free! Six outstanding lecturers affiliated with Florida State University, the University of South Florida, Albany State University, the U.S. Naval War College, and our local Historical Society. See the schedule for details.
Mayor Van Johnson will read the Emancipation Proclamation on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Riverfront Park. He will be accompanied by an African American choir performing period music. Join us!
From 3 - 5 p.m. Saturday, enjoy live Civil War era music by Carol Harris and Randy Mims. Carol owns Wombat Sound Music Store. Randy and Carol also play music with Fishlips the band and the Trinity Trio, playing Renaissance and Classical Music and with the Lanark Fiddle Orchestra, playing Scottish, Celtic, Old Time Music, and Waltzes.
Saturday at 8 p.m.: Outdoor Theater! The Panhandle Players will perform "Island Light: War and Reconciliation" at Lighthouse Park on St. George Island. Presented by the St. George Island Lighthouse Association. Actors and set designers have been working hard and having fun getting ready for this production. Don't miss it! Free.
The Civil War encampment will be open Saturday and Sunday, with drills, demonstrations, and displays. Free and open to the public. A great opportunity to learn about Civil War history and see it brought to life!
Living history at the antebellum Orman and Raney House Museums. Be sure to visit these museums to learn about these prominent families and their interesting Civil War stories. Ladies in period attire will be sewing a flag and making bandages for soldiers, and there will be story telling at the Orman House. The St. George Island Lighthouse and Museum will be open where you can climb the lighthouse and learn about its Civil War history. See a cannon ball believed to have been fired from a Union ship. Check the schedule for the impressive lineup of events and activities.
Sunday from 1 - 4 p.m. Cemetery Tours. The Apalachicola Historical Society will conduct tours of the Chestnut Street Cemetery highlighting Civil War history. Flags will mark the graves of Union and Confederate veterans. Did you know there are seven veterans of Gettysburg buried in our historic cemtery? Tours are free and will start every half hour. Free.
Sunday at 3 p.m.: Outdoor, camp-style worship service at Lafayette Park. Come in period attire, or come as you are. Period music from local choir members. Communion will be served. Rev. Woody Bollinger, a Methodist minister who serves as a chaplain when reenacting, and Rev. Themo Patrionis have teamed up to present this historic-style worship service. Non-denominational. All are welcome!
Sunday at 5 p.m.: Lecture at the Maritime Museum by archaeologist Nancy White: An Archaeological Mystery of Confederate Forts on the Apalachicola River.

Our Civil War exhibit continues to develop and will officially open Friday. A Civil War era signal cannon, normally housed upstairs in the Armory building, is now at the Maritime Museum on temporary loan. Special thanks to Mark Parsley for his loan of other authentic artifacts and his extensive efforts on this exhibit. His expertise, dedication, enthusiasm, and perseverance made it possible. Thanks also to Homer Hirt for his loan of an impressive collection of Confederate currency which will soon be on display. We are also adding a flat screen television which will play a slideshow of historic images.
We are proud to welcome our reenactors: the crew of the USS Fort Henry, the USS/CSS Waterwitch, and U.S. Marine Guard, Steam Sloop of War USS Pawnee. They will be providing a wide variety of demonstrations and activities all weekend. Come out and have fun while learning about Civil War history! We will also be joined by members of the R. Don McLeod Chapter 2469 United Daughters of the Confederacy, story teller Robyn Rennick,musicians Carol Harris and Randy Mims, Librarian and Researcher Caty Greene, and others. Partner organizations include the National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus, Georgia, the St. George Island Lighthouse Association, the Orman House Museum, the Raney House Museum, the Apalachicola Historical Society, Historic Apalachicola Main Street, the City of Apalachicola, the Center for History, Culture and Art, and the Panhandle Players.
