Panacea Blue Crab Festival

May 4, 2013

Join us in Panacea, Florida on Saturday, May 4th, for the Annual Blue Crab Festival. Held annually at Woolley Park on scenic Dickerson Bay, the quaint festival originated in 1975 to promote the crab industry in Wakulla County.
Throughout the event you will be entertained by live music, dance performances by cloggers, and historic demonstrations.  A long-time tradition of the festival is the Crab Pickin’ Contest. Watch entrants pick their way through a basket of Blue Crabs to “weigh-in” the delicious meat for a prize.  Of course, it is always exciting to watch the Mullet Toss, where contestants throw a real mullet in a distance-toss competition.
Make sure you bring your appetite to the festival, as vendors will be cookin’ up boiled crabs, fried shrimp, hushpuppies & other mouth watering treats throughout the day.  Take a stroll through the park to visit the many arts & crafts on display, where you can buy souvenirs and gifts.

Bears of the Forgotten Coast
By: Sarah Barrett
The coastline of Florida from Shell Point to Port St. Joe is known as Florida’s Forgotten Coast.  Nationally, this area is most well known for its quiet beaches and abundant seafood.  For residents of the Forgotten Coast it is also known for a subpopulation of Florida black bears. Black bears are secretive animals that can live in close proximity to people without detection.  But when bears have easy access to food attractants such as garbage, pet food, and bird feeders, bears will venture closer and more often into residential areas. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Sarah Barrett will present information to residents about bear biology and behavior and how to coexist with Florida’s black bears.

Big Bend Hospice Introduces Program Encouraging Important Conversations

What does it mean to you to live well?  This is one on the first questions a trained facilitator will discuss with you as a part of Big Bend Hospice’s new program PEACEPEACE (Planning Early about Care at the End) is modeled after Respecting Choices™ a well-developed and proven systematic approach to help people articulate clearly and with those who matter most their wishes for end-of-life health care.
The PEACE program uses certified health care facilitators from Big Bend Hospice who have been trained in helping people have on-going discussions about important issues like what treatment a person would want if they are no longer able to speak for themselves to how would a person like to be remembered by those who matter most to them.  These desires are captured on a document like Five Wishes and a reliable system is set in place to ensure the document is available as needed.
