There is a story published June 2nd by
Lizette Alvarez called “A Fight Over Water, and to Save a Way
of Life.”
The
story is about the current stress on the Apalachicola Bay system because of a lack
of fresh water coming down the river system and the ongoing battle to protect
the river and bay from the growing water needs of upstream users.
The
damage is being seen not only by the oyster industry but also in the fishing
industry, since the Apalachicola Bay seves as a nursery for a
number of commercially viable species.
Currently
Georgia is winning the water
battle but congress is still in the process of developing its plan.
A
number of local people are quoted in the story including Leroy Shiver, Chris
Millender and seafood workers association president Shannon Hartsfield.
