Franklin County throws support behind bike trail study

Franklin county commissioners have agreed to support a plan to evaluate potential corridors for a major bike trail that would connect Tallahassee to the coast.

The board on Tuesday approved a resolution of support for the “concept of the Capital City to Sea Trail corridor as long as it does not interfere with existing hunting activities” in the area.

The board also agreed to seek planning funds from the Department of Transportation to evaluate potential corridors for the trail.

The approval at this time is only to do a study.

Once that’s complete the county will have to approve any further action.

The bike path would be a part of a 120 to 150 mile trail called the Capitol city to sea loop connecting Tallahassee, St. Marks, Medart and Sopchoppy and possibly extending into Franklin County.

The path would go along state roads as well as use parts of the old Georgia, Florida, and Alabama railroad.

Parts of the path are already complete – one section along the Ochlocknee Bay is already being widely used.

The issue was initially raised in Franklin County in April, but was tabled by the county commission after concerns were raised about the potential costs to the county and of potential impacts the trail could have on hunting near the trail.
