Commission chairman apologizes for slur during hiring debate

County Commission chairman Cheryl Sanders opened Tuesday’s county commission meeting with an apology for something she said during the July 2nd commission meeting.

Commissioner Sanders used an ethnic slur while arguing with other commissioners over employee pay during a larger discussion over the hiring of a new road camp supervisor.

The comment was quoted in the local newspaper and has since drawn some attention from bloggers including the WashingtonPost.com and the Huffington Post.

Commissioner Sanders said she was awful sorry about the comment adding that it shouldn’t have happened.

She said she didn’t mean for the statement to be derogatory or negative calling it something that didn’t need to be said.

Miss Sanders said she is sorry if she caused and hardship to the board, to the people of Franklin County or to county staff.
