Fishermen will get another chance to
target red snapper in the Gulf
of mexico this year.
The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council
voted this week to increase the 2013 red
snapper total quota from 8.4 million pounds to 11 million
pounds.
This means the commercial quota will increase to
5.610 million pounds and the recreational quota increase to nearly 5.4 million
pounds.
The 11 mp quota is the highest catch level the
Council could set without having to possibly cut the quota in subsequent years.
The Council also agreed that a supplemental red
snapper season will open October 1 and run continuously until the
quota is met.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the
supplemental season will be approximately 21 days long.
The
estimate, however, will be reevaluated when the June recreational landings data
become available in mid-August.
