Caitlin's 3rd Annual Beach Cleanup is coming up tomorrow.
The
Beach cleanup will be held on St. George Island on August the 14th
from 8 till 10.
The event is the brainchild of Caitlin Smith who
was 11 when she decided cleaning the beach would be a good way to protect local marine life and make the beach prettier for visitors
by removing empty bottles, broken glass, and cigarette butts.
Last year 30 volunteers joined in to help her and they picked up nearly 450 pounds of trash from the beach, Lighthouse Park, Pine Street, Island Drive, and the south side of the bridge.
The most commonly
found items were plastic bottle caps, pop-up tent frames, beach chairs, and
cigarette butts.
This
year she is hoping for a bigger turn-out.
If you would like to take part in
the 3rd Annual Beach Cleanup, volunteers will meet up at Sometimes It's Hotter, 112 E. Gulf Beach Drive .
After the event, Sometimes It's
Hotter will be serving refreshments for all of the volunteers.
