Franklin County applying for oyster grant money from the Shell Marine habitat Program

County commissioners have agreed to apply for a grant through the Shell Marine habitat Program that could possibly provide funding for local oyster restoration projects.
The program is a cooperative effort between Shell Oil and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to support conservation and restoration activities along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
The program focuses on restoring oyster reefs to protect coastal marsh and wetlands, and to increase oyster and associated fish and wildlife populations, as well as protecting and restoring coastal wetland habitat for shorebirds and waterbirds.
The grants tend to range from 50 thousand to 200 thousand dollars but the county would have to match the grant either in cash or in-kind services.
The deadline for the county to apply for the money is September the 5th.
The county has also agreed to contact the Workforce Board because it might be able to provide the matching funds for the grant.

The Shell Marine habitat Program has provided 219 grants since 1998.
