Changes to
the county flood maps officially take effect on February 5th, 2014.
The county was notified by FEMA this week of the
effective date for the new flood maps.
The new flood maps are part of larger changes in
the National
Flood Insurance Program in which the county has to participate in order to be
eligible for federal flood insurance.
Changes to the federal
program include redrawing local flood maps and in many cases raising the base
flood elevations.
The program is also
changing its rates.
The rate changes are
being dictated by the federal government.
The county will also have
to begin issuing flood plain management permits which they have never done
before.
Those permits will cost
an additional 50 dollars and require two inspections for homes built in high
hazard flood zones.
