SOUTHERLAND APPLAUDS FLORIDA WATER LAWSUIT FOLLOWING APALACHICOLA FIELD HEARING

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Steve Southerland, II testified today at a Senate Commerce Committee field hearing in Apalachicola regarding the crippling impact of decreased water flows, drought, and increased water salinity on Apalachicola Bay and its oyster industry.  Following the field hearing, Southerland joined Governor Rick Scott and Senator Marco Rubio to announce the State of Florida will file a lawsuit in September with the U.S. Supreme Court to prevent Georgia’s unchecked withdrawal of water resources upstream, which has threatened the viability of Apalachicola and nearby North Florida communities.

“I appreciate Governor Scott and the State of Florida for acting decisively to save Apalachicola Bay,” Southerland said.  “This water dispute has carried on for far too long, and the people of Franklin County are the ones suffering the consequences.  With the future of Apalachicola Bay and Northwest Florida’s economy hanging in the balance, I am hopeful that a resolution is finally in sight.

“Countless oystermen, coastal businesses, and hardworking families have seen their way of life destroyed by decreased water flows into the Apalachicola River and Bay, and it’s time to take action.  I appreciate Senators Rubio and Nelson for organizing today’s hearing, and for the large number of residents that attended and gave voice to the concerns of a community that’s hurting,” Southerland concluded.
